Why implementing ISO 9001 is integral to business sustainability

PCSG has seen a big uptake in its services to help implement quality management systems (QMS), following the recent revisions to ISO 9001.

The quality management standard ISO 9001 has long been considered the world leader for QMS certification, and updates at the end of 2015 have increased its relevance further. The last few months have seen many enquiries here at PCSG from business leaders, wishing to learn more about the proven benefits of QMSs, or asking for help with either implementing or updating an existing ISO9001 QMS.

“Effective application of QM procedures provide an important foundation for future business success”

A detailed report by the Centre for Economics and Business Research found that “effective application of QM procedures provide an important foundation for future business success and can attribute to an increase in share price, profit revenue and customer retention as well as employee, customer and user satisfaction.” ISO 9001 provides the requirements needed to establish, implement and certify an organisation’s quality management system and the British Standards Institution, who write the standards, claim that adoption of these systems will improve an organisation’s overall performance, help build its reputation, instil trust, and enhance customer satisfaction along the supply chain. “These claims are entirely consistent with our own experience of successfully integrated and implemented quality management systems,” says William Yonge, PCSG’s QMS specialist.

Recent changes introduced at the end of 2015 now make the adoption of a QMS a strategic decision, led from the very top and an integral part of any organisation’s sustainability development. The new standard is less prescriptive than its predecessor, focusing less on procedures and more on performance, and according to the BSI it “better reflects current business practices and market demands”.

Another significant change concerns a company’s attitude to risk, with the introduction of the concept of ‘risk-based thinking’. This shift in emphasis makes it a specific requirement that organisations determine the risks that need to be looked at, thereby ensuring that their systems can achieve their intended outcomes, prevent or reduce undesired effects, and achieve ongoing improvement.

At PCSG, we believe that companies who best manage their financial, social and environmental obligations, risks and opportunities are those that survive and prosper, innovate, and adapt well to change, whilst contributing to strong communities and healthier environments. We offer a wide range of services to assist businesses along their journey – to help increase their cost efficiencies, ensure future growth and more sustained success, enhance their environmental outcomes and build them a strong and ethical corporate reputation.

Following on from the updates to the ISO 9001 standard, PCSG has been employed to explain the new changes and provide training to our clients, as well as helping implement new QMSs, and updating existing QMS manuals/sustainability reports, in line with the revised standard.
